Gossip Fodder

Kalyn Leigh McAlister is native to Oklahoma and a member of the Chickasaw Nation. She writes poetry, short fiction, long fiction, and nonfiction. Many pieces explore an effort to understand and challenge the colonial narrative of indigenous American history. Other themes include trauma, the disobedient body, sexuality, sexual abuse, and gender roles. Her work has been published in Rogue Agent, Quarterly West, and Spilt Milk. She serves as an editor for Petrichor.

Most importantly, she lives with two dogs who are either very good or very bad depending on the day, configuration of the stars, and how many people are watching.

Scully, a queen

I greatly enjoy telling people she’s a treewalker, which sounds mythlike. To date, she is the only dog who loves me oh-so-much while also not giving one fig what I think of her or her behavior. Like her namesake, Scully wants to believe but just can’t unless she smells, hears, sees, tastes, or touches it with her paws.

Buckley, a lemon, a beagle

Well, he’s got beagle in him anyway. This sixteen-year-old has instituted a moratorium on roughhousing and horseplay indoors. In his middle years, he has taken to sleeping on pillows on furniture—princess and the pea style. He has clouds for eyebrows and a terrible habit of biting his nails.
